The Wii's price will be less than or equal to...
Nintendo announced today that its next console, the Nintendo Wii, will not exceed $250 in America (or 25,000 yen in Japan). While not an exact price, it's at least definitive confirmation that the Wii will easily be the cheapest console this holiday season. The company also announced that it plans to ship 6 million systems worldwide between the system's launch in Q4 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on March 31st, 2007, and that it expects to sell 17 million Wii games in the same time frame.
In all, Nintendo expects to see growth of 18% in sales globally, which is based on anticipated strong demand for the Nintendo DS and a successful launch of Wii.
Nintendo promises more details soon, including launch dates, the launch titles, and further details on the Virtual Console. Hopefully we'll also get an exact price soon as well, rather than a vague "will not exceed $250."
