Super Mario Galaxy

Nintendo's E3 press conference has just concluded, and there were a number of big announcements at today's showing. Chief among them, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy were both confirmed for release this year, as well as the Wii Zapper and a new Mii-focused Wii Channel.

Aside from that, Mario Kart was confirmed for Q1 2008, complete with online play in both battle and racing modes. Nintendo stressed online play as a focus in general, with EA Sports titles including it and 32 player online support in Medal of Honor.

You'll find all the major revelations in convenient bullet point form below:

  • Reggie is happy; today is a celebration of a turning point in the industry
  • 69% of current industry growth comes from Nintendo products; portables now account for 50% of all game systems sales versus 30% five years ago thanks to the DS and GBA
  • DS has 25% market share among all hardware in US
  • Nintendo has seen huge growth among older and female gamers, especially in comparison to competitors
  • Wii has been sold out worldwide for 33 weeks now (perhaps they should produce more?)
  • 60 Wii games now available in NA, 300 for the DS; 140 titles coming for the DS (100 for Wii) by the end of the year
  • Wii Zapper shown and houses Wii Remote & Nunchuk in slick plastic casing; compatbile with titles like Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Ghost Squad, and Medal of Honor
  • Medal of Honor will include 32 online multiplayer
  • Wii Zapper will be packaged with unnamed Nintendo software (our guess is Duck Hunt) for a mere $19.99
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be released on December 3rd
  • Reggie indicates that Nintendo is serious about online, but then shows a video almost totally without gameplay footage (stuff like Wii Channels instead) to back it up
  • 5.6 million downloads to date on Wii Shop Channel
  • Check Mii Out Channel announced; allows others to search through Miis online and vote on them.
  • Madden NFL 08 and FIFA Soccer 08 will be online, as well as DQ Monsters Joker and Guitar Hero III
  • Mario Kart was confirmed, and will be playable online in Q1 2008 in both racing and battle modes; will come packaged with a custom Wii wheel; looks like a prettier Double Dash!! graphically
  • Iwata talked about expanding the market without losing hardcore gamers. "New gamers forever."
  • A video played showing a family enjoying Super Mario Galaxy, Brain Age 2, etc. early.
  • Brain Age 2 will be released on August 20th
  • Super Mario Galaxy is the first worthy successor to Super Mario 64, and will release on November 12th
  • Nintendo will bring vision training to North America as Flash Focus (DS)
  • Nintendo introduced Wii Fit as the next big thing. It will include a custom wireless balance board, allowing players to do stretches and various exercises while tracking body mass index and overall health. Miyamoto and Reggie demonstrated the device by playing a game of soccer.

Overall, it was an excellent showing by Nintendo. Wii Fit is almost guaranteed to be the next big mainstream sensation, and it looks like Nintendo may finally be getting serious about online gaming. Hardcore gamers should be happy too, with the likes of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl due out this year, and the promise of Mario Kart onilne in Q1 2008.

Better bring it Sony.

i'm so glad i was able to get a nintendo wii and not a xbox 360.
