While Microsoft has its Summer of Arcade, Nintendo announced today that NPD Group data shows its Summer of Fun isn't over yet. According to NPD data, the Nintendo DS and Wii again won the hardware sales battle, with 608k DS units and over 555k Wii units sold in the month in North America.
This gave the Wii a 49% share of console sales in July, which extended Nintendo's overall sales lead just taken from the Xbox 360 in June, while the Nintendo DS pulled in 73% of handheld sales.
Software sales were also strong, with 5 out of the top 10 games found on Nintendo systems. This included Wii Fit at #2 with 369,603 units sold, Guitar Hero: On Tour at #3 with 309,695 units sold, Wii Play (which should really be on the hardware charts given the included Wii Remote) with 284,035 units sold at #4, Mario Kart Wii at #7 with 174,464 units sold, and finally Rock Band at #8 with 162,886 copies sold.
“Great hardware goes hand-in-hand with great software,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Various types of games for the Nintendo systems are represented in the top 10, demonstrating how we continue to break down the barriers between veteran and new players.”
